Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient Asian system of healing that views health as a state of harmony and balance between mind, body and spirit. Diagnosis is based on observation: examination of the pulse and tongue, and asking lots of questions. Chinese Medicine seeks to treat the root cause of illness, beyond its symptoms.

TCM care can involve a combination of acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet and lifestyle counseling as well as a form of massage called tuina and even, traditionally, a form of mind-body exercise like tai chi or qi gong. The positive “side effects” of your treatment can include healthy weight loss, more restful sleep, stress reduction and increased energy.

What to expect during Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment

You will be asked to complete an intake form before we meet to give us a complete background of your health history. In the first session, you can expect a detailed intake lasting 1.5 hours during which we will discuss the content of your form and have a thorough look at each aspect of your health. There will be lots of questions, especially around body sensations (feelings of heat or cold, thirst levels, pains or discomfort), mental and emotional well-being, sleep patterns, environmental sensitivities (reactions to cold or damp spaces) and genetics. Your doctor will also have a look at your tongue and take your pulse.

The next session, 1 hour, will be a report of findings explaining your diagnosis in terms of Chinese Medicine along with a choice of treatment plans.

Many new patients are curious to know how acupuncture feels. Acupuncture should never be painful. Fine needles, close to the diameter of a human hair, are gently applied to the treatment points. Clients often report sensations of pressure, numbness, itching or pulsation when the needle is inserted. Sessions are deeply relaxing and restorative. Depending on the area to be treated, you may be asked to partially undress and will be covered with a sheet (while you relax on a wonderfully heated table).
