Shiatsu Therapy

Shiatsu is a Japanese word that means “finger pressure”. The technique uses the thumb (as well as palm, elbow and feet) to apply holding pressure on selected acupressure points around the body. The treatment also includes rotations and stretches of limbs, joints and meridians. What makes Shiatsu a unique therapy is that it combines diagnosis and treatment.

Shiatsu, like Traditional Chinese Medicine, believes that disease is a result of an imbalance of Ki energy or life force, in the pathways of energy, or meridians. Treatment aims to unblock the flow of Ki energy in order to bring healing and balance to the body, mind and spirit. Shiatsu also incorporates the modern Western sciences of anatomy, physiology and pathology. According to Western medicine, Shiatsu works by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system to calm and relax the body.

What to expect during a Shiatsu treatment

A Shiatsu treatment is 60-90 minutes and usually takes place on a padded mat on the floor or a table. The patient wears comfortable clothes and should remove any jewelry. To avoid discomfort or difficulties in diagnosis, patients should come for their treatments with empty stomachs and bladders.

The initial consultation will involve a detailed case history and use a variety of techniques to determine the condition of Ki energy in the body. Following the treatment, recommendations may be given on gentle meridian stretches and self acupressure as well as changes to lifestyle or dietary patterns to support health and well-being.
