New Year’s Resolutions Made Possible, with Help!

By Nana Jokura

I don’t always make New Year’s resolutions but this year I am feeling inspired to make lasting changes. In the past I have naively set myself up with huge goals that fade away because I didn’t have 100% will power 100% of the time. Things will be different this year because I will seek and accept help.
This year I will:
Honour commitments I’ve made to myself
Act on my intuition
Listen to the signals from my body
Value my relationships
Let things go
Understand that perfection is an illusion
Make time for the things that nourish me
Give generously
Enlist the help of others to achieve my goals

I have more specific goals that I will keep to myself because I want to harness the energy rather than dissipating it by telling everyone. I’ve written down my private goals and will only share them with people I’ve trusted to help me. The act of writing serves to make them more real and will be a reminder for me. I like this acronym for successful goal setting: SMART = Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed (from Brendon & Christine Lumgair).
Enlisting a few key people to help me ensures that I am accountable to someone else and that I don’t have to rely on my sheer will power all the time. My chosen team will be supportive, have my best interests in mind and will gently kick my behind (if I need it). I will remember that it’s really the process of working towards my goals, that’s important. As long as I’m on the path, I’m good. Why did I ever think that I had to do everything myself? My team will help me be my best so that I can be my best to help others.
