Edema and Swelling

Edema in the feet and ankles is a common occurrence in the later stages of pregnancy, especially after a long day on your feet. Mild edema is considered a normal part of your body’s response to the increase in fluids during pregnancy. However you need not suffer the tightness and stiffness of swelling, acupuncture can help. Women often experience relief within 1-2 sessions.

You need to be sure to mention any swelling to your midwife or doctor, as some types of edema need to be monitored closely.

Self-care

The most useful measure you can take is to limit standing or sitting for long periods of time and to rest as much as possible with the legs elevated. You can also exercise your ankles by rotating them 5 times in each direction, and continue with moderate exercise including walking, swimming or yoga.

Maintain good fluid intake, drinking enough water so your urine is clear, as cutting back on fluids will only send signals to your body that it needs to hold on to the fluids it already has.

Foods that reduce edema can be included as part of a healthy diet. These include corn, celery, lettuce, watercress, grapes, mandarin oranges, mangoes, watermelon, aduki beans, sardines, lentils, peas and jasmine tea.

Drinking barley water may also be useful. and it is easy to make at home. Simply pour one litre of water over 30 grams of barley grains. Simmer until the liquid has reduced to half a litre. Add lemon juice, strain through a sieve and drink up to four cups per day.
